  • Grooming Experience: Grooming experience is calculated from the date a person first begins grooming, whether in training or employment. Time spent training is included when calculating total grooming experience.

Beginner: For competitors with less than 18 months’ total grooming experience. A competitor may compete in Beginner until they reach 18 months’ grooming experience or achieve three class wins at Beginner level, whichever occurs first. Class wins are cumulative across all grooming classes and categories at Beginner level. The win count resets when the competitor progresses to Intermediate.

Intermediate: For competitors with between 18 and 36 months’ total grooming experience. A competitor must move from Intermediate to Open when they reach 36 months’ grooming experience or achieve three class wins at Intermediate level, whichever occurs first. Wins achieved at Beginner level do not carry forward.

Open: A competitor may remain in Open until achieving three class wins at Open level. A first place counts as one win and a Best in Show counts as one additional win. Therefore, two first places and one Best in Show equal three wins.

Champion: Competitors who competed at Champion level before January 2027 may continue at Champion level. From January 2027, a competitor who elects to compete at Champion level must make that choice when entering their first competition of the calendar year. Once they have competed at Champion level, they may not return to Open.
