  • MUTUAL AID THIRD CYCLE

  • Rematriation asks us to re-examine our relationships with each other, the land and spirit. It is our right and our responsibility to heal the Earth, ourselves and one another. Art making is one synthesis of our healing relationship. As the Sogorea Te' Land Trust defines it, "Rematriation is Indigenous women-led work to restore sacred relationships between Indigenous people and our ancestral land, honoring our matrilineal societies, and in opposition of patriarchal violence and dynamics."

This third cycle of mutual aid prioritizes Black & Brown women + gender-expansive artists working with rematriation themes, providing $1,111 micro-grants and collaborative art share spaces to add depth of work. We are gathering a cohort of 6 artists interested in collaboratively receiving support + feedback from other artists working with similar themes and concepts. The cohort will be paired with 6 mentor artists. Art forms will be openly interpreted. By creating a supportive critique space, we hope to support healing for relationships to art making in community.

Half of the mutual aid is reserved for indigenous relatives. Black identifying folks are honored as indigenous descendant. This mutual aid is intended for folks who identify as low income queer artists of color.

This mutual aid is dedicated to the health and wellness of artists and its use is entirely up to the recipients' discretion to enrich their own work. Six recipients will receive a one-time $1,111 micro-grant with no follow up needed.

Art making deserves to be an embodied process. We aim to deconstruct and unlearn competition, instead rooting into relationship with our individualized artistic practices. We aim to root into the role of artists as change makers and archivists of our movements and spiritual transformation at this time. The cohort will participate in five 60-90 minute sessions alongside the mentor artists + Britt and Raveena from the team. Additionally, each mutual aid recipient will participate in one 60-minute session 1:1 with their paired mentor artist.

Timeline. Applications are open between March 23 - 31st, 2023 beginning with the new moon. All recipients will hear back from the team by April 15th. Selected recipients will have until April 24th to (1) confirm participation in the cohort, (2) provide schedule availability and (3) confirm where to issue the $1,111 micro-grant. The first meeting will take place the week of May 8th, with 5 consecutive sessions thereafter. Recipients should expect to receive $1,111 funds disbursement by June 1st.

Please only apply if willing and able to participate in 3 weeks of sessions during this time period.

Paperwork. If selected for the cohort, you will be asked to provide a one-page tax form called a W-9 for us to process your $1,111 micro-grant. This form asks for a name, address and TIN or social security number. If this is not possible, we will put our best effort into accommodating needs.

Support. Reach out to [email protected] if you are unable to submit using the form above and we will troubleshoot entering your application. Note this is a support email address, please do not not follow up once the grant application has been submitted.

    In community & In solidarity,

The Aurora Loving Kindness Project Team
